Online marriage in the UAE can involve submitting a marriage application, uploading documents, paying fees and receiving the marriage contract electronically. In some officially regulated marriage procedures, the marriage contract itself may also be completed remotely.
However, “online marriage” does not mean that every couple can simply marry over a private video call. The applicable court or marriage authority must accept the procedure, and the couple must still meet the legal requirements for their type of marriage.
What Does Online Marriage Mean in the UAE?
The term “online marriage” can refer to several different stages of the marriage process:
- Online application: submitting the marriage request and documents electronically.
- Electronic processing: identity verification, fee payment and communication with the competent authority online.
- Remote marriage contract: completing the marriage procedure remotely where the applicable legal framework permits it.
- Electronic marriage certificate: receiving the officially approved marriage contract in digital form.

Is Online or Virtual Marriage Legal in the UAE?
Yes, official marriage procedures can be completed electronically or remotely in certain circumstances.
The UAE Ministry of Justice operates an electronic marriage system through which eligible applicants can submit the marriage request, pay the required fee and receive an electronic marriage contract.
For Sharia marriages under the federal judicial system, Resolution No. 70 of 2025 on the Regulation of Sharia Marriage Officers expressly provides for marriage contracts to be concluded electronically using digital signatures and allows remote completion of contracts.
The important point is that the remote procedure must take place through the legally recognised marriage process. An informal video call between a couple is not, by itself, equivalent to a court-documented UAE marriage.

Can You Register a Marriage Online Through Dubai Courts?
Dubai Courts provides electronic elements within its marriage-contract process, but couples should distinguish online registration from a marriage that can be completed entirely remotely.
Sharia Marriage in Dubai
The current Dubai Courts customer journey includes:
- submitting the marriage application electronically;
- paying the applicable fees;
- communicating with an accredited marriage officer; and
- receiving an approved electronic marriage certificate.
Dubai Courts also states that the parties or their authorised legal representatives must appear in accordance with the applicable procedure.
Civil Marriage in Dubai
Dubai Courts also provides civil marriage for eligible non-Muslim residents. Its current process includes electronic application through approved service centres and issuance of an approved electronic marriage certificate.
At least one party must be a Dubai resident and both parties must be at least 21 years old. The current Dubai Courts procedure also requires the parties or their authorised representatives to appear.

Can the Marriage Contract Itself Be Completed Remotely?
In some UAE marriage procedures, yes.
The federal framework for Sharia marriage officers now expressly allows marriage contracts to be concluded electronically using digital signatures and permits remote completion of the contract.
This does not mean that every marriage service offered by every UAE court follows the same remote procedure. Dubai Courts, the federal courts and other emirate-level judicial authorities can have different eligibility, appearance and document requirements.
Couples should therefore confirm the specific procedure with the authority that will issue their marriage contract rather than assuming that an online application automatically means a fully remote wedding.
Online Marriage Through the UAE Ministry of Justice
The UAE Ministry of Justice currently provides an online Request for Marriage Contract service.
The published process includes:
- Register using UAE Pass.
- Submit the marriage application online.
- Pay the applicable government fee.
- Complete the marriage procedure required for the relevant marriage type.
- Receive the electronic marriage contract.
For Muslim applicants, the Ministry states that the couple communicates with the marriage officer to conduct the marriage. For non-Muslim applicants using the federal service, the notarial judge meets the parties and the contract is registered and issued.
This distinction is important because the exact level of remote processing depends on the marriage route.
Documents Required for Online Marriage in the UAE
There is no single document list that applies to every online marriage in the UAE. The requirements depend on the couple’s religion, nationality, marital status, emirate and marriage route.
Common documents may include:
- Emirates ID or passport;
- proof of residence where the particular route requires residency;
- proof of marital status;
- a premarital medical examination certificate for marriage routes where it is required;
- identification documents for the guardian and witnesses for applicable Sharia marriages;
- a divorce judgment if previously divorced;
- a death certificate if widowed; and
- any additional documents requested by the competent court or authority.
A birth certificate or embassy No Objection Certificate should not be treated as universally required for every UAE marriage. Some routes may require additional nationality-specific or embassy documents, while others do not.
Foreign Documents
Documents issued outside the UAE may need to complete the applicable authentication or attestation process before they can be accepted.
Dubai Courts also requires applicable foreign-language documents to be legally translated into Arabic and foreign documents to complete the required official certification process.

The exact steps vary by authority, but an official online marriage process generally follows this sequence:
- Choose the correct marriage route. Confirm whether you are applying for Sharia marriage, civil marriage or another recognised procedure.
- Check jurisdiction. Residency, nationality and religion can determine which court or service you can use.
- Prepare the documents. Obtain identification, marital-status evidence, medical screening and any other documents required for your route.
- Submit the application electronically. Use the official service channel provided by the competent authority.
- Complete identity and document verification. Provide any corrections or additional documents requested.
- Complete the marriage procedure. This may involve a marriage officer, authentication judge, personal appearance or an authorised remote procedure depending on the route.
- Receive the marriage certificate. Eligible services issue an approved electronic marriage contract or certificate.
How Much Does Online Marriage Cost in the UAE?
Government fees depend on the authority and type of marriage.

The fact that the certificate is delivered electronically does not make it less valid than a paper certificate issued through the same official process.
If the certificate will be used outside the UAE, however, additional attestation or legalisation may be required depending on the destination country and purpose of use.
Is a Private Video-Call Wedding Valid in the UAE?
A private video-call ceremony should not automatically be treated as a legally registered UAE marriage.
What makes an online or remote marriage legally effective is compliance with the applicable marriage law and completion of the procedure recognised by the competent authority.
A marriage conducted under the law of another country presents a different issue. Its recognition in the UAE can depend on whether it was legally valid where it was concluded and whether the marriage certificate completes the required UAE authentication, attestation or registration procedures.
Online Marriage vs a Virtual Wedding
An official online marriage and a virtual wedding celebration are not the same thing.
- Official online or remote marriage: completed through a legally recognised marriage procedure and results in an official marriage contract.
- Virtual wedding celebration: an online ceremony or celebration that may have personal or symbolic meaning but does not by itself establish a legally registered UAE marriage.
